Sara Hörberg

Hej!

I'm Sara, a passionate educator with a deep love for teaching Swedish as a Second Language. With a master's degree in this field and a bachelor's in Pedagogy, my journey in education has been very rewarding. In 2009, after nearly a decade of teaching at Folkuniversitetet, I felt inspired to leap and founded The Swedish Teacher. I wanted to try something new at that time—teaching a language via video chat. It was an exciting challenge, and I’m proud to say it has opened up a whole new world of possibilities in language education.

Today, I split my time between The Swedish Teacher i Uppsala AB and Uppsala University, where I work as an assistant professor in Swedish as a Second Language. My academic journey began at Uppsala University, where I studied Linguistics, Swedish as a Second Language, Philosophy, and Pedagogy. I have a particular interest in language testing and am a certified SWEDEX examiner, trained in evaluating the Swedish language skills of medical staff. In my role at Uppsala University, I also contribute to creating test material.

I’ve been teaching it since 2001, and over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide range of students, from individuals to organizations like Uppsala University Hospital, Vattenfall, Göteborgsoperan, Fresenius Kabi, Forsen, Brekke & Strand Akustik AB and many more. Helping students prepare for their Tisus and sfi-tests has been incredibly fulfilling, as I enjoy guiding them through these important milestones.

I also have a soft spot for teaching Swedish to students with Swedish heritage. I’ve collaborated with the excellent Swedish genealogist Jean Erickson Burton, AG, to translate letters from Swedish immigrants in the USA and Canada. This project has connected me deeply to the stories and histories of so many families. I’ve also enjoyed working with actors and musicians on pronunciation and voice coaching, which adds a creative flair to my teaching.

Having lived abroad for over ten years, I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges of adapting to a new culture. This experience has enriched my teaching, giving me a unique perspective and a deeper empathy for my students. Every day, I’m reminded of why I love what I do—helping others connect with the Swedish language and culture in meaningful ways.

Margaretha Skeffington

Margaretha started teaching for The Swedish Teacher in 2011. She is a native Swedish speaker from Umeå, and currently lives in Laholm in the south of Sweden.

Margaretha holds a Bachelor’s degree in Swedish as a Second Language from Uppsala University (2009 – 2012) and earned her teacher certification (SFI-teacher) at Högskolan i Gävle. Margaretha is also a certified TEFL-teacher.

Margaretha has over ten years experience of teaching Swedish as a Second language and has worked for Folkuniversitetet Uppsala, The Swedish teacher and, Uppsala University. Since 2017 she is working as SFI-teacher in Laholm.

Sanna Nornberg

Key qualifications: Swedish, English, and Special Education.

Sanna is a highly experienced teacher with expertise in Swedish, English, and special education. She has taught Swedish for 20 years and joined The Swedish Teacher in 2020. Sanna is a native Swedish speaker from Nyköping who currently resides in Spain.

She is an accredited Swedish, Swedish as a Second Language, and English teacher. Sanna graduated from Linköping University in 2004 and studied Special Education at Uppsala University, Web Development at NTI School, and Psychology at Malmö University.

Sanna has been teaching since 2004, covering subjects such as Swedish, Swedish as a Second Language, English, and Special Education for students in grades 4-9. In addition, since 2019, she has been teaching Swedish as a second language to adults through online platforms.

Lotta Lantz

Key qualifications: Swedish School of San Diego, Swedish for work

Lotta is a native Swedish speaker with many years of professional experience in Second language acquisition. She has taught a wide range of students with multifaceted backgrounds. She started teaching for the Swedish Teacher in April 2018. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Media (University of California, San Diego) and has studied Swedish as a second language at Linnaeus University, Växjö, and Spanish.

She is a contributor to the Swedish School of San Diego, where she taught Swedish and facilitated learning for children with Swedish heritage and background. She participated in developing a core curriculum that followed Swedish educational system guidelines and requirements. She has taught reading intervention and special education.

Lotta will teach you while boosting your confidence in conversing and participating in conversations socially and in the workplace. She utilizes her broad background in education, sales, imports, communication, and media to incorporate relatable topics and subject matters in her teaching. She can also assist you with PowerPoint presentations, preparing for job interviews, or writing professional emails.

Whether you want to learn for fun or out of curiosity about language, family relations and cultural heritage, studies, or professional career changes and job opportunities, Lotta looks forward to assisting you with your goals. Vi ses!

Erica Tamm

Key qualifications: Great with kids, Swedish-speaking children living outside of Sweden

Erica began teaching for The Swedish Teacher in April 2017. She is a native Swedish speaker from Uddevalla who currently resides in Sydney.

Erica is proficient in Swedish and English. From 2015 to 2016, she studied Swedish at Linnaeus University (Linnéuniversitetet) in Växjö, Advanced English at Ability College in Sydney, and Swedish as a Second Language at Högskolan Väst (West College). Erica holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in linguistics from the University of Sydney and a Certificate IV in English Language Teaching (TESOL) obtained in 2021.

With extensive experience working in preschools in Göteborg, as a youth group leader, and as a mathematics tutor, Erica has taught Swedish at the Swedish School of Sydney since 2018. Additionally, she has been teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) at the ILSC Group in Sydney since 2021.

Cecilia Berglund

Key qualifications: Legal Swedish, multilingual

Meet Cecilia, a passionate and experienced Swedish language instructor based in Stockholm. With a solid background as an assistant lawyer and a journalist, she earned her Candidate of Law at Stockholm University in 1993 and holds a Bachelor's degree in Swedish as a Second Language.

Cecilia has been teaching Swedish as a Second Language to adults since 2012. She has valuable experience at Studiefrämjandet, EF Corporate Solutions, and Hermods. Her expertise extends to teaching students at Höglandsskolan (K-9) in Bromma.

Fluent in English and Italian and proficient in Danish and French, Cecilia's diverse language skills make her a valuable asset in language instruction.

Cecilia Yrttiaho

Key qualifications: Swedish for business, Swedish in Finland, level tests

Cecilia is a native Swedish speaker from Närpes, Finland, and has fifteen years of experience teaching Swedish and Business Administration. She holds a Master's Degree in Entrepreneurship and Management from the Swedish School of Economics and Business, a General Education degree from Åbo Akademi University, and a Developmental Psychology degree, also from Åbo Akademi University.

Cecilia has been an accredited teacher since 2010 and has studied educational leadership. Her expertise includes teaching Swedish to professionals, particularly in the medical field, conducting level tests, assisting students with written and oral presentation skills, and helping with job applications, interviews, and general presentations. Cecilia provides personalized study plans based on individual goals and aspirations for students who are dedicated to learning Swedish.

Hannah Goldring

Key qualifications: multilingual, Swedish for business, translator

Hannah joined The Swedish Teacher as a teacher in February 2014. She is a native Swedish speaker residing in Göteborg. Hannah is proficient in Danish and speaks Norwegian, English, Dutch, German, and French.

Hannah has extensive experience teaching Swedish as a foreign language at Berlitz and as a private tutor. She is a certified teacher with a degree in Swedish as a second language, humanities, linguistics, and literature from the University of Gothenburg, earned in 2006. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from Linné University, Sweden, and a Master’s degree in business administration and management as well as French language and literature from Ecole Supérieure de Commerce, Brest, France.

Since 2008, she has worked as a translator and proofreader. She excels in various fields, including Advertising & Public Relations, Business / Commerce, Computers, Engineering, Insurance, Linguistics, Machinery & Tools, Manufacturing, Marketing, and Transportation/Shipping.

Jeanette Morales

Key qualifications: Tisus, writing development, Swedish high school diploma

Jeanette started teaching for The Swedish Teacher in November 2016. She is a native Swedish speaker from Skara who currently resides in Birmingham, UK.

Jeanette is an accredited Swedish, Swedish as a Second Language, and English teacher. She graduated from Högskolan Väst (University College West, Trollhättan) in 2006.

With nearly twenty years of experience, Jeanette has taught teenagers in upper secondary school (gymnasium), as well as adults. She has worked with students of all levels, from beginners to advanced, and particularly enjoys working with students' reading and writing development. Many of our students have passed Tisus (Test i svenska för utländska studerande) with her assistance.

In addition to her work at The Swedish Teacher, Jeanette also teaches Swedish and English at Svenska skolan i London and NTI-skolan. She also has experience in voice coaching for actors.

Lena Hoff

Key qualifications: Multilingual, translator, Ph.D

Lena began teaching for The Swedish Teacher in November 2020. Originally from Göteborg, she currently lives in Athens, Greece.

Lena is not only a native Swedish speaker but also fluent in Danish, English, and Greek. With many years of experience in teaching Swedish and Danish as foreign languages to adults, Lena has been offering personalized one-on-one lessons since 2010. Additionally, she shares her expertise at Siountri School of Languages and at the National and Kapodistrian University in Athens. Lena has also worked as a translator and as a teacher of Modern Greek grammar and literature at The Norwegian Institute in Athens.

Lena holds a Bachelor's degree in Swedish as a Second Language as well as Swedish and Danish from Stockholm University and Linnaeus University. Additionally, she holds a Bachelor's Degree in Modern Greek Studies and English and a Ph.D. in Modern Greek Studies. Lena obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Swedish as a Second Language, Swedish, and Danish at Stockholm University and Linnaeus University. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Modern Greek Studies and English, as well as a Ph.D. degree in Modern Greek Studies.

Per Ny

Key qualifications: SFI, upper secondary school, special education

Per began teaching for The Swedish Teacher in 2023. He is a native Swedish speaker from Västerås.

Per is an accredited teacher of Swedish as a second language and Swedish and English. Having graduated from Mälardalens högskola in 2003, he has continued to inspire and educate adults and children alike. His credentials also include university credits in Special Education and History from Mälardalens högskola.

With over two decades of teaching experience, Per has adeptly navigated school years 6-9, provided special education for school years 1-2, and taught SFI. His international exposure includes several years in England, where he honed his skills at various primary and special schools, making him a versatile and globally-minded educator.

Hanna Thomasson

Key qualifications: SFI, Swedish for business, pronunciation

Hanna has a 23-year-long and broad teaching career, making her capable of assisting with all language skills. She offers counseling on pronunciation and grammar in a contrastive way, and can also help with formal communication in both spoken and written formats, such as business emails, PowerPoint presentations, and other formal writing and oral presentation skills.

Hana holds a Master's degree in Swedish and English from Mälardalen University, demonstrating her deep understanding of these languages. She specialized in Swedish as a second language at Lund University and obtained her teacher certification at Malmö University.

Throughout her career, Hana has taught students from the age of 13. She began her teaching career in Malmö and Trelleborg, and in 2010, she started working in Malmö at a secondary school, where she taught newly arrived immigrants. Since 2015, she has taught adults at SFI and Komvux in Trelleborg. For the past three years, she has been at Higher Vocational Education in Kristianstad, where she has been teaching Swedish and English within specialized fields of different professions.

Åsa Jälevik

Key qualifications: SFI, teaching all ages, multilingual

Åsa is a native Swedish speaker from Lidköping living in Stockholm. She earned her teacher certification in 1994 at Gothenburg University. Åsa has experience teaching Swedish and English and has a wide experience ranging from teaching elementary school to having taught basic Swedish at Kriminalvården for Liber Hermods.

Åsa is accredited in Swedish as a Second Language and has taught Swedish to adults at SFI and SVA grundläggande at Grundvux for seven years. She currently works at CentrumVux in Haninge with SFI level D. Åsa loves teaching one-to-one. She is great at adapting the lessons to each individual and finding their way of learning Swedish

Åsa loves languages, communication, and personal development. She speaks English, basic German, and Spanish and is currently studying French, which gives her a personal insight into what it’s like to learn a new language online.
